Session on Dwarkanath Tagore: Visionary of a New Era, followed by a Musical Performance by Shri Prabuddha Raha, 7th August 2024, The Bengal Chamber premises.


The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I), along with Bengal Heritage Foundation, UK and British Deputy High Commission, curated a special session titled "Dwarkanath Tagore: Visionary of a New Era," followed by a musical performance by the eminent singer Shri Prabuddha Raha on 7th August 2024 at the Williamson Magor Hall, The Bengal Chamber premises.

The programme commenced with an inaugural session featuring a welcome address by Mr. Gautam Ray, President of BCC&I, and a theme address by Mr. Sourav Niyogi, one of the trustees of the Bengal Heritage Foundation, UK. The Chief Guest was Dr. Andrew Fleming, British Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata.

Following the inaugural session, a panel discussion on "Dwarkanath Tagore: Visionary of a New Era" took place, moderated by Mr. Suranjan Som, Chairperson of the Bengal Heritage Foundation, UK. The panelists included Mr. Sreedip Roy, Partner at Bengal Jewellery LLP; Mr. Arunava Bardhan, Director at Adamas, UK; Mr. G M Kapur, State Convenor of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH); Mr. Amit Guha, General Secretary of the Bengal Heritage Foundation, UK; and Mr. Subrata Paul, Corporate Advisor and Independent Director, and President of the Indo-British Scholars’ Association. The discussion was followed by a Q&A session and the felicitation of the dignitaries, concluding with a vote of thanks. 

The session delved into the remarkable life and legacy of Dwarkanath Tagore and provided a deep dive into the success of Tagore as a pioneering Bengali businessman, highlighting his extraordinary contributions to industry, society, and the broader Indian economy. The speakers emphasized on his visionary approach to business, which included forming strategic partnerships with British firms—an unconventional move that set new precedents in the 19th-century Indian business landscape.

The session concluded with reflections on Dwarkanath Tagore’s enduring legacy. His influence on subsequent generations of Indian entrepreneurs and his role in shaping the economic landscape of Bengal were acknowledged as significant milestones in the region's history.

The event culminated in a musical performance by the renowned singer Shri Prabuddha Raha, offering a cultural treat to all attendees in commemoration of the 22nd Shraban, marking Rabindranath Tagore's 83rd death anniversary. 

The entire initiative was well attended by many renowned personalities like Mr. Barun Chanda, a well-known Actor and Author. It was well covered by leading media houses.
